Acetaminophen – Should this Dangerous Drug be Available Over the Counter?

Acetaminophen, the principle drug in several popular painkillers, has caused liver damage in many, and liver failures and death in a few. This is a pretty grisly track record for an over-the-counter remedy. Mixing it with alcohol is especially dangerous.tylenol-warning

I stayed at a bed and breakfast in Iceland, and as I was being shown around, I noticed a large bottle of Excedrin labeled “Hangover Pills”. When I mentioned to the owner that acetaminophen in combination with excess alcohol, was responsible for several hundred deaths annually in the US alone, she turned white as a sheet. She had no idea that such a commonly used drug could pose such dangers. She immediately removed the bottle.

Your Biome – Your Personal Bacteria Collection

Your Body is Host to Around 100 Trillion Bacteria and they outnumber you 10 to 1. There Are Some Other, More Complex Creatures As Well.  They Perform a Number Of Critical Functions, and Identify You as Precisely as a Fingerprint.biome-mostly-bacteria

The bad guys grab all the headlines. The killer bacteria are out there and not to be trifled with. There is the present threat of MRSA, along with past threats from now vanquished killers like small pox, bubonic plague, and cholera.

Immune System Basics  – The Adaptive Immune System

The Adaptive Immune System Is Able To Mount A Massive Attack Against A Bacteria Or Virus And Remember It. Once A Disease Has Attacked and Has Been Beaten Back, We Are Immune For Life.immune system

Well, not always for life but a very long time to be sure. The innate immune system, powerful though it is, proved inadequate. Soon after the vertebrates appeared, we find animals with the adaptive immune system. The ‘reason’ for the development is this: The innate immune system can recognize quite a few bacterial and viral pathogens, but this recognition is more or less fixed, cast in the DNA of the innate system white cells. With their assorted special receptors, they can recognize a more or less fixed spectrum of bacteria.

Dogs Can Smell Prostate Cancer With Near 100% Accuracy

Several labs have now confirmed that trained dogs can sniff prostate cancer in urine with accuracy exceeding 95%. This beats anything humanprostate-sniffing-dogs-doctor technology can do. The latest biopsy technology, a quite unpleasant procedure, has a 33% false negative rate (fails to detect). Dogs can sniff other cancers as well. This may have great application in early detection of cancers.

Evolocumab – do we really want to reduce cholesterol?

Again the drug industry has got a new cholesterol reducing drug, and again, heart ‘events’ are reduced, and most likely, something else is increased – but what? Well, once again, we’ll probably have to wait 20 years to find out.Evolocumab-leeches

When leeches failed to cure dropsy, we suppose some medieval physicians recommended, with full solemnity and confidence, more leeches. Or would this be the solution proffered by the leech-mongers?

Heart Rate Monitor.HR Mon

This one is important for exercise. Specifically, it is important to know maximum heart rate, resting heart rate, and how much the heart rate goes down 1 minute after peak exercise. The ‘leader’ in heart rate monitors is Polar. The monitors are a bit pricey and not awfully user friendly.
