Statins: The Zombie Drug That Will Not Die

zombie

The resiliency of this drug is remarkable. Study after study has found statins useless if not detrimental for almost every cohort. Yet the drug lumbers on, relentlessly pushed by the drug industry, and duly prescribed by a change-resistant medical profession.

In fact, one out of four people over 45 are taking statins. Perhaps as many as 20 million. Given the (complete lack of) benefit, this is one of the most astounding swindles ever perpetrated. Move over Bernie Madoff.

It must be known in some influential circles that statins are useless, and harmful for many. We reported on various harms here, here, here, here, and elsewhere.

Just in case no one got the message, we thought we would offer a summary of the latest research.

One group compared the heart benefits of taking statins to taking the Mediterranean diet. That one was no-contest. The Mediterranean diets won handily. (And the imputed statin benefit was pure fantasy.) Here.

A recent study in the European Journal of Epidemiology, here, finds a huge increase in in heart disease in post-menopausal diabetic women that started taking statins. Increased heart disease risk??? Who ordered that? So if you are diabetic don’t take statins. And if you are not, we know from other research that statins have a very good chance of making you diabetic.

A study from The British Medical Journal, here, concludes this.

“Conclusions: High LDL-C is inversely associated with mortality in most people over 60 years.”

Inversely? This means more LDL cholesterol, less mortality. That’s not what we have been hearing for the past 30 years. This pretty much says in the strongest terms, “leave high cholesterol alone.”

How statins are supposed to work?

It is called the lipid hypotheses. Lipids, presumably, cause heart disease. Statins, among other things, reduce LDL cholesterol. However, there are two big flies in this ointment. First of all, as expounded in this post, it is clearly not a good idea to lower cholesterol. Second, other drugs that do lower cholesterol cause a sharp increase in problems. So lowering cholesterol isn’t how statins work. Statins do, however, reduce heart attacks, but they increase death from other causes, so there is no net benefit for almost any group, and a lot of side effects. Ironically, it appears almost certain that it is not the cholesterol reduction property of statins that is reducing heart attacks. Instead it likely is either an anti-flammatory properties that statins appear to have, or possibly statins reduce immune system activity. Truth is, it isn’t really known!

The US Government Tosses Its Hat Into The Fray

statins-fdaLet’s look at what the good folk at the FDA have been up to. This much-maligned agency has come up with these amazing warnings and recommendations about statins:

  • Cognitive (brain-related) impairment, such as memory loss, forgetfulness and confusion, has been reported by some statin users.
  • People being treated with statins may have an increased risk of raised blood sugar levels and the development of Type 2 diabetes.
  • Some medications interact with lovastatin and can increase the risk of muscle damage.

Hmm. There may be brain damage, diabetes, and muscle damage if you take statins. However, they go on, amazingly, to state, “This new information should not scare people off statins..”

What?? How much federal warning do we need. Only brain damage, diabetes and muscle damage. OK, no problemo.

An to protect us from these perils, see if you can guess what they are going to do:

  1. Prohibit the drug
  2. Tell doctors to stop prescribing the drug for most people
  3. Put a warning on the label.

If you guessed #3, you win.

So that’s our latest on statins. The evidence to stop taking this dangerous drug would seem to be overwhelming.

statins-egg-on-faceOn the other hand, if this were to happen. Big Pharma would be heavily discredited and would make less money, and the medical profession would have an unbelievable pile of egg on its face. Either of these, I would cynically wager, would outrank the well being of the 15 or 20 million currently taking this drug.

It is truly amazing that statins are so beloved in light of the evidence. I sometimes view Dr. Malcom Kendrick’s blog and he reported on the passing of Duane Graveline – The Space Doc. Duane suffered transient global amnesia (TGA) that he firmly believed was the result of taking statins. He also became afflicted with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis which he also believed to be caused by his statin use – the WHO has also issued warnings of this possible association.

Drug companies and their blind followers really irritate me sometimes!!!

I was never convinced by the reports – not because I was some research genius but because I have never thought that the life extending medications were generally suspect. I’m so glad that I dug my heels in. I thought my doc was going to shove it down my throat if I said no again. Thankfully, it didn’t come to that. Oh, I wish I had felt the same about Levaquin.
